On The Side | Hot Dog Central.
BY ROCHELLE KOFF
Mmmmmmmm. We're biting into a ''Hot Dog in Paradise,'' piled high with hearty beef chili, mustard and
chopped onions -- just one of 21 ways to dress a dog at Hot Dog Central, an oasis of ''gourmet doggery''
on Broward Boulevard in Plantation. A free-standing venue with a walk-up or drive-through window, it
offers to-notch dogs, burgers, sandwiches, eggs and other fast fare.
Weiners are all-beef (or pick kosher or veggie) with toppings like housemade sweet corn relish and perky
cole slaw. The ''Killer'' is a true Chicago dog, piled high with chopped tomatoes, onions, sport peppers,
neon relish, pickles, mustard and a dash of celery salt on a steamed poppy seed bun. Owners Seth and
Holly Lowenstein (he's a former New York chef, she's from Philly) also make the Brooklyn Reuben Dog, the
Texas Tommy and the New York Push Cart.
Other faves: the grilled Black Angus burger, a fairly authentic Philly cheese steak and don't-miss french
fries -- fresh-cut daily, they're golden brown, crunchy and so good.

The Dish
Consider any of 21 different gourmet ways to dress hot dogs, including the perfect construction of a
Chi-town dog ($3.75) -- a steamed poppy seed bun, pickle spear, yellow mustard, chopped tomatoes
and onions, hot sport peppers, neon relish, a dog that pops when you bite it, and the piece de
resistance of every Chicago dog, a good sprinkle of celery salt.
Or, have the Venezuelan ($3.95), coleslaw, crushed potato chips, a dog and Hot Dog Central's secret
sauce. All that and you still have another choice to make. Will yours be 100 percent beef, 100 percent
natural veggie or a kosher dog?
And, you'll definitely want fries. They're cut fresh on premises each day, fried until crisp and golden, and
totally wonderful (plain fries, $2; with cheese, $2.50; with chili and cheese, $3.25).
If you don't do dogs, buzz on over for the best chili in town. No beans; it's filled with big hunks of pure
ground beef and palate pulsing spices.
SUN-SENTINEL
People from all over the country gathered at the Sony Ericsson Open to
enjoy a lovely facility, beautiful sunshine, and entertaining tennis. USTA
Florida held its most successful Membership Appreciation Day, thanks to
the wonderful catering of Great Performances, who provided USTA Florida
with organized service and appetizing food. Jill Cole, Corporate Hospitality
Manager, worked with USTA Florida to make the event pleasant for all
members. Seth Lowenstein, Chef/Owner of Hot Dog Central in Plantation,
Fla. donated all the delicious hot dogs, free of charge for the day. It is not
easy to give away and prepare over 600 hotdogs to hungry tennis fans;
however, Seth and his business accomplished the task. USTA Florida
appreciates their kindness and hospitality, and from all of us, we say,
“Thanks!” A whopping 350 people renewed, extended or became new
members of the USTA at the tournament
